Top 10 Resume Writing Tips - Part I
This morning, as I am reading through notes left from my last job search endeavor, I ran across a section highlighted “Top 10 Resume Writing Tips”. Obviously, recorded from the many weeks of research I did online trying to become a “resume writing expert” (yeah right!), I thought I would share these notes with you and highlight the ones I thought were most important and mention those that weren’t.
The first tip I had written down was Implement Relevant Keywords and at first glance this did not make much sense. But as I thought about it, I realized that this is probably one of the most important tips in my notes. Think about it. With the thousands of resumes hiring employers and recruiters receive everyday, don’t you think that they are going to look closer at a resume that catches their attention with keywords related to their job offering right in front of them?
What I mean is, if you are applying for a sales position in the pharmaceutical industry and the first thing a recruiter notices in your resume objective is “Pursuing a career in manufacturing”, do you think the recruiter is going to continue reading your resume? Of course not! In fact, if you’re lucky they will move it to another pile labeled for “manufacturing jobs” and if you’re not lucky it is most likely headed for the shredder in the corner of their office.
So what does it mean to implement relevant keywords in to your resume? It simply means to use keywords relevant to that particular job position you are applying for. A great way to do this would be to use job titles and job skill headings that relate to and match the job you are applying for. Using my previous example, the first thing the recruiter should have seen in the resume objective was “Pursuing a career in Pharmaceutical Sales”. The next thing the recruiter should have seen would have been job titles using the term “Pharmaceutical Sales” and this same or slightly modified versions of this keyword used throughout the resume.
In conclusion, I hope you agree that Implementing Relevant Keywords in your resume is an important first step to writing a perfect resume. As always if you have comments or would like to make suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or leave your comments below.
