How to Proofread Your Resume

Proofreading your resume is very important. Any time a resume has incorrect word usage, format issues, or punctuation mistakes it can hurt your chances of impressing your potential employer, and more important getting the job. This article will discuss some of the things you should do prior to relaeasing your resume to the public.

Your resume is your first impression to a potential employer. If you are qualified and have great experience and skills but have a sloppy resume that is not proofread, it will make it less likely that you will get the job.

Everyone makes mistakes, but it is important that a resume does not have any mistakes. By carefully proofreading your resume you can get rid of mistakes on this valuable document. When you finish your resume, and before you hand it to a potential employer there are a few things you can do.

  • The fist thing to do is to use the spell check on your word processing program. This will pick up spelling and grammar mistakes in the document. But you should not only do the spell check, as there can be other errors that the program does not pick up, especially with format issues.
  • Read over your resume very carefully. This is the most important step when proofreading your resume. You should read it out loud so that you can hear if there are any grammatical mistakes, and if it flows. You should read your resume out loud a few times to make sure it is free of mistakes.
  • Wait a while and re-read your resume. This way your eyes will be fresh and more likely to pick on mistakes you may have made in the document.
  • Have another person look over your resume. By having someone else proofread your resume it will give you another set of eyes, as they may pick up on some mistakes. Another person can also let you know important information you may have omitted. Even with proofreading a resume many times you can repeatedly miss a mistake. Having another person proofread your resume will make it more likely that a mistake you missed, several times, will be found.
