How to Maintain Your Resume
You should always keep your resume updated so that everything you accomplish is on it. While updating your resume is very important, maintaining it is also equally important. This article discusses some important things to consider regarding maintaining your resume.
Often times you may find that there are gaps in your employment history during the period you are looking for another job. The following are a few things you can do in these times, putting them on your resume, to maintain it.
Volunteer work is an attractive aspect to have on your resume. Volunteer work can show a potential employer that even though you were not employed, or doing it while employed, that you are socially responsible. This can give you an advantage over others that have gaps in their employment history or have not done any volunteer work.
Another thing you can add to your resume to maintain it is education and courses besides college. If you have further education besides college work it can show the employer that you want to learn. This can be an attractive feature on a resume because you will have to learn, at least some aspects, of the job you are applying for. If you have specialized education that is relevant to the job you are applying for make sure to highlight it in your resume. You can list further educational training and courses after your degrees in the section of education on your resume.
If you have received any awards, both professionally or academically, list them on your resume. This will show that you were recognized for something you accomplished. It does not even have to be an award but even an idea that was implemented while at a job or while at school. A potential employer can find these things attractive because it shows you have thought of an idea on how to make something better.
In maintaining your resume you should also put any special projects or contract work you have done. Even the smallest contract job, such as a temp job, can look good, as it will show the employer that you were active versus not doing anything. Project based assignments should also be listed, as these can show you had the skills to accomplish a specialized project. If the project is, in any way, relevant to a job you are applying for make sure to highlight it and not bury it far down on your resume.
