How to Choose a Resume Format
It is very important when you write your resume that you put it in the right format. You have to pick the best way to show your skills, employment history, and education. By choosing the right format for your resume, you will be able to present yourself in the best manner and the more likely get the job. There are four types of resume formats, which are chronological order, functional order, comprehensive order, and professional.
The chronological order resume is the most common resume format. This type involves listing your history, in jobs and education, starting with the most recent. This can be a good format to use if you have built upon your jobs that you have worked at, moving up with each in the skills and responsibilities accomplished. If you have not built on past jobs and have large gaps in employment history a chronological order resume may not be the best option for you.
A functional order resume is great for senior level and creative positions. This type will list qualifications, skills, and accomplishments without the names or dates of the jobs. With this type of resume it will highlight skills and qualifications without giving the name and specific job you were at. This can be a good resume if you have a lot of work related accomplishments or awards.
Having a comprehensive resume can show potential employers both the names and dates of jobs as well as your skills. With a comprehensive resume you will show job history in chronological order and list your skills and what you accomplished at each job. This can be a good resume if you have gaps in your employment because it highlights what you did at each job. It is also a good resume type to have if you have changed careers because it will still show you have acquired applicable skills for that job and can do the same in the job you are now applying for.
A professional resume is for people that have been in one specialized field and only held one type of job, such as only a lawyer. This type of resume is also longer than other types as it will be more detailed in the jobs performed. A professional resume can be good if you have only had a few jobs as you can highlight each tasks performed and accomplishments of the jobs you have had.
